Com. Terry Wickett died Dec. 21 and the City is required under the Municipal Government Act to fill the vacancy through a by-election.

Council set the date for the by-election at its Jan. 17 meeting, and at that meeting also appointed Shellah Petersen, the city’s public works clerk, as returning officer and Neil Smith as chief executive, as alternate returning officer.

“With the experience gained in this election, Shellah is fully capable of handling this by-election process,” Legislative Services Manager Lisa Lockton wrote in a report.

The lobby of the Tom Hornecker Recreation Center can be used as a polling station, Lockton wrote.

“This area is accessible and has enough space to walk voters in and out with social distancing,” she wrote. “Using this smaller area will mitigate facility rental costs for the by-election.”

In the October 18 municipal election, Nanton residents voted at the Nanton Community Memorial Center.

Candidates have until January 31 at noon to submit their documents.

Mayor Jennifer Handley told The News last week that she was aware of five candidates interested in running in the by-election.
