YORKTOWN – Dr. Brooks Allen (“Al”) Mick, Vietnam War veteran and longtime resident of Yorktown, Va., died Jan. 25, 2022 surrounded by his family. Al has spent his life serving, healing and giving to others. Whether you call him “Dad” or “Papaw” or “Al” or “Dr. Mick” or “Colonel Mick”, to know him was to love him. For his family, friends, patients and colleagues from the army, Al described the phrase salt of the earth.

Al was born on June 28, 1941 to Charles and Mildred in Ohio. He attended Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed residencies at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A retired U.S. Army Colonel, Al served on active duty in the Army during the Vietnam War, worked as an Army Reserve medic for more than 20 years, and concluded his career in the role of hospital commander.

Al has spent over 50 years practicing medicine. He served as an internist at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, OH and was one of the only doctors doing house calls at the time. Al then worked at Mary Immaculate and Sentara Careplex hospitals in Newport News, Virginia. Al was also on staff at Langley Air Force Base Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. Through his work as a physician, Al has had a positive impact on many patients, not only through his medical expertise, but also through his special love for caring for others and helping them heal.

Al loved sailing and boating and belonged to the local power squadron. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping and hiking, often retreating to the mountains equipped with his tent and every survival gear one could need. He was an avid photographer, a self-taught guitarist, and although often quiet and reserved, he always taught us never to take life too seriously with his wonderful, quirky sense of humor.

Al is survived by his wife Nancy and children, Erin, Laurie, Jimmy, Wendy, Bobby and Jeff and adored his 11 grandchildren. His family will hold a service to celebrate his life this spring. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Virginia.
