June L. Adekunle, 81, of the City of Westcott passed away peacefully on Sunday morning January 23, 2022 at her home.
June was born March 25, 1940 in Oconto Falls, the daughter of the late Lionel and Joyce (Gallagher) Hodgins. After graduating from Appleton Memorial High School, she attended UW-Madison where she earned her undergraduate degree and master’s degree in economics. She then moved to Washington DC where she worked for the United States government as an economist.
June married Joseph Adekunle in Evanston, Illinois. The couple lived and worked in Washington DC and later moved to Nigeria for several years. Joseph predeceased her in 1990. June retired in the mid-1990s and moved to Shawano in 1995 to help care for her elderly parents. She was an avid writer and former member of the Shawano Writers Group. June has also been very active in the disability rights movement and has championed several organizations.
June is survived by her son, Thomas Adekunle of Shawano, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Ronald Hodgins, and sister, Lois Smith.
A public memorial service for June will be held this spring.
