Kalispell native and author Stan Bain has started a new series of suspense thrillers titled “Entrepreneur.” The first in the series is now available online at Amazon.com, through Barnes and Noble, and on its website stanbainbooks.com.
An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Bain says his new series, which begins in the 2040s, is about a building contractor and former Navy sniper, Jim – codenamed Boss – in Helena, Montana, who also oversees a team of highly skilled assassins. based in the Nevada desert. Their missions come from an American senator, but they are paid by the CIA. The stories are set in various parts of the world and are based on Bain’s own experiences with skydiving, scuba diving, as a licensed multi-engine pilot, and his use of satellite imagery and computers during his military service. .
“The locations are real and most of the technology is real,” Bain said. “The story, well, who knows.”
In the series, Bain’s main character, Boss, passes on a mission to the team’s coordinator – codenamed Scorpio. The team – codenames Jasper, Cosmo, ACE and others – is made up of retired army snipers who are given jobs to assassinate or capture targets in many countries, including the United States. .
A graduate of Flathead High School, Bain was drafted into the army in 1966 and served in the Vietnam War in such dangerous duties as night ambushes against the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese army, convoys and guards. . After a post-war life of nightmares, night sweats, hallucinations and debilitating pain from his exposure to Agent Orange, Bain was eventually diagnosed with PTSD.
A veteran counselor encouraged him to write about his experiences in Vietnam and he self-published his first non-fiction book “You Are Never Alone” in 2018. In 2020, a year after a return trip to Vietnam to try to make peace with his demons, he published his second book, “Return to Vietnam”. An article about Bain and his second book appeared in the Daily Inter Lake in September 2021:
Bain retired from a 33-year career with the U.S. Forest Service, then worked for several years in the construction and home inspection trades, enjoying his 15-year role as Father Christmas at Kalispell Center Mall. (His book “Being Santa-Santa’s Secrets” is also for sale on his website and Amazon.
He now resides in Florida.
As the years of suffering from PTSD took their toll, Bain turned to her writing to raise awareness of the disorder to help her heal and to reach out to other veterans.
“The pain of Agent Orange is endless,” Bain said. “However, I’ve found writing helps with PTSD and the pain of Agent Orange…when I write, I focus on the story and forget about my pain,”
Bain’s says the second book in its “Contractor” series should be available in December with additional characters. His third book, which he is currently working on, features a prostitute and a nun who are partners. Netflix is potentially interested in making a movie about the first book in its series, Bain said, and its publisher, Excel Book Writing, has arranged to pitch a script to Netflix this fall.
Stan Bain will be signing his books from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, September 9 at The Bookshelf, 101 S. Main St. in Kalispell.
Bain’s first book “You Are Not Alone” is only available on his website and at The Bookshelf in Kalispell. However, when it re-releases in January, it will be available on all platforms.
