Korean War veterans honored in downtown Tyler Square

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Friday is POW / MIA Day, a day on which the country remembers the men and women who were prisoners of war or missing in action.

Chapter 12 of the American Legion honored these members as well as Korean War veterans in Tyler. They held a ceremony in the downtown plaza near the Korean War Memorial in which an oral history of the war was read while the veterans in attendance were honored. Korean War veteran Bill Jacque always feels special when he meets with other Korean War veterans, but says Friday was very special to remember those who served in the war .

“When you come together like this and are honored like this, you always think of those who did not come back and those who were injured or died in the course of their actions,” said Jacque.

The American Legion Chapter 12 felt this was important as Korean War veterans are all starting to age. Chapter Chaplain Debra Christian was especially grateful for helping organize the ceremony, as her father is a Korean War veteran.

“Today, honoring Korean veterans means a lot to us because we must never forget who sacrificed themselves for us to have these freedoms,” Christian said.
