Keith Griese of the Daniel Goho American Legion Post 87 in Dansville was named Livingston County Legionnaire of the Year earlier this summer.

The award is presented annually to a legionary who has dedicated his time and energy to improving his position, the community, and the American Legion.

Griese has been a member of this American Legion for 52 years and has held every post in the Post, from Sergeant-at-Arms to Post Commander. He was the first Vietnam veteran to command the Goho Post.

For 31 years, Griese has led the Swiss Post firing squad, which honors between 20 and 30 funerals per year. Funeral honors are bestowed upon all veterans, whether or not they are members of the Legion.

Another Swiss Post program he has been responsible for for 40 years is the Post Christmas Project, which helps underprivileged children in the region have a great Christmas. The program helps over 40 families and up to 90 children have a Christmas.

Other activities Keith is involved in include improving the Post’s social quarters, helping to raise $ 250,000 to complete the renovation; the Chicken BBQ Fundraising Committee; monument committee working with the village on a park dedicated to local veterans; and improving the entrance to the post by adding biographies to the photos of veterans on the walls.

Livingston County American Legion Commander Lenny Englert presented Griese with a plaque recognizing his selection at the Livingston County American Legion’s annual convention, which took place on June 9 in Nunda.
