Circleville – Michael R. Thompson, 73, died on January 1, 2022.
He was the son of Howard and Betty Thompson of Portsmouth, Ohio.
A graduate of Portsmouth High School, Michael went to Ohio University for a BA and MBA in 1979.
Michael has worked in telecommunications his entire life. He was a senior engineer for GTE and became responsible for engineering operations for Verizon and ECSM Communications Contractors. Even after his retirement, he designed projects for the Frontier phone.
Michael was a proud veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, completing his service in the Army Reserve for five years.
Michael has lived most of his life in Circleville, Ohio, participating heavily in the Circleville community. He was a former president of Centraide. He was a member of the board of directors and chair of planning and zoning for Circleville City for several years.
His zest for life was coaching children in soccer and officiating on Sundays for the Circleville Youth Soccer Association. He also refereed high school soccer through the OHSAA for several years.
Michael is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lois Thompson.
Daughter Jillian Manson (Nathan) also survived to mourn her loss. and grandchildren, Parker, Presley and Pierce.
He leaves behind a sister, Kathy Dunn (Anita); and nieces, Bree, Brooke and Beth; a sister-in-law, Christi Owens; a niece, Dani Owens; and a nephew, Ben Owens, also survive.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Betty and Howard; her stepson, Michael Temple; and his brother-in-law, Gary Owens.
Michael’s gruff exterior often gave way to a tender heart to those of us who knew him well. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and he will be sadly missed.
Cremation has taken place.
There will be no services.
Arrangements have been made by Wellman Funeral Home.
