Rhu War Memorial volunteers step in with more TLC ahead of the contest judges’ visit

The RHU War Memorial may already be a winner – but that hasn’t stopped local volunteers from pitching in to make it even more beautiful.

As reported in the advertiser recently, the memorial won the area’s ‘new entry’ category in Legion Scotland’s 2022 Best Kept War Memorial competition.

It means he is in the running for a national award – and a team of volunteer assistants returned to the memorial this week to ensure he looks his best when the national judges come to the village.

Members of the Helensburgh branch of the Legion Scotland – including their honorary chairman, Denis ‘Spike’ Jones, 98 – were joined by Royal Navy staff and volunteers at the memorial on Thursday as they got to work to renovate the three benches in the memorial park.

A spokesperson for the local branch said: ‘The pews are in need of refurbishment and were one of the areas where we lost points during this year’s ‘Best Kept War Memorial‘ campaign. , so we hope we can restore them to good level before the national judgment.

“Navy personnel worked hard as a team to sand the pews and ironwork ready for staining.

“The branch hopes to have the benches dyed by the weekend – as always, weather permitting!

“A huge thank you to everyone who participated yesterday for your hard work.”
